Why would my CT engine have a hydraulic clutch and DK box?

Hi all,

CT engine.

We've dropped the fuel tank to check and repair, and have noticed that as well as having the carb return pipe on the tank blanked off with an original VW part (as per CU), the clutch is hydraulic not cable as it should be on a CT. We also aren't sure how a CT is running with the fuel return blanked off.

My logbook says it is a 1970cc, and we assumed the previous owner was planning to put a CU in, but the blanked tank and hydraulic clutch suggest it came out of ther factory as a CU, which was replaced by a CT, strange as though it may seem.

How can we identify the gearbox please? We can see the numbers 26  52

So this must mean the van was originally a CU and has been swapped for a CT, but with the original gearbox?.

How could I tell if the CT had been upgraded in some way? Is this possible?

The plate under the front left seat will tell the engine and gearbox it left the factory with. What is the last two digits of the top row?

The numbers mean 26 th of may 1982

So you have got a long legged DK box with hydraulic clutch...

So it was a 2L CU, swapped out for a CT.

Take a photo please of the throttle cable where it arrives through the tinware to the single carb.

Yes, it explains why it was fine in 3rd up to around 50, then struggled to continue in 4th. I thought it was the larger wheels, but maybe not. 

Also, blanking off the fuel return pipe must have had an effect somehow? 

Will post the photo of the cable shortly

Wow...you are asking a lot...

I run a modified CT (1.7 @ 65bhp) and am going to fit a custom box bought from Vantopia to get a lower 1st with higher 3rd and 4th.
All the calculations are based on using  185 R 14 C tyres on steel rims.....like it says in the book.
On long journeys the standard box is too short in 4th, remember this was a bread van V max 103 kph, but when the engine is tuned, 3rd is too short at 73kmph @ 4100 rpm.
So if your engine is brought up a bit, and on standard wheels, this should be fun to drive.

Ah, it came with 16" Tolimans, I have a set of standard rims I am going to swap, but no tires yet

I did wonder if upgrading the CT would be a cheaper option than putting in a CU.

I still plan to add LPG at some point, if that is any factor.

Hello,

As I thought, the 2L throttle cable has been cut down to fit the CT front plate.

The cable normally ends in a long lug to make attaching/regulating easy.

We were wondering how the throttle cable attaches to the carb on a CU engine, to compare. 

​​​​​​The cable needs replacing, and as I'm planning on putting a CU engine in at some point, we wondered if we could use a CU cable for the CT without cutting it?
