Impressive is not the word I would have used.

Certainly isn't right. I wouldn't even drive down to the shops 200 yards away knowing that mess was there let alone a main road.

I wouldn't start the engine. Never mind go down shop.

That looks like it has melted plastic sleeve of some sort over the crimp joints.
And then all caked in grease.
Hmm - me personally?...
I would get a new connector, pins, hall sensor and a protective rubber boot.
Or at worst, get a salvage piece of loom, and joint that in to the main loom.
With soldered and heat shrink tubing sleeved joints.
And again - a new sensor as it is unlikely that the existing connector can be repaired properly.
Needs to be done properly or not at all.
UPDATE - after re-reading the earlier post about the conversion kit - that may be your best plan - especially as it comes with the new connector / adapter plug too.
And then all caked in grease.

On the plus side, this garage only touched this, the rest of the engine / loom looks unbutchered!Robsey wrote: ↑15 Sep 2021, 07:27 That looks like it has melted plastic sleeve of some sort over the crimp joints.

Don't worry, as I said intention is to replace the hall sensor /connector assembly completely, and fit new connector etc to loom (i.e. the conversion kit from BW). The cost is pretty reasonable and it's preferable to have proper interchangeability in the future. Sadly BW (and all other suppliers I can see!) don't seem to have the loom plug itself in stock at the moment, so I'll clean up the mess and verify all the connections for the time being. Or maybe dig out a generic 3 way connector to wire directly to the hall sender until the proper one comes in stock.
Thanks for the info on the early/late dizzy connector spec, that does make sense. I'll see what they put on the receipt...
Ahh, it's been a few years since I've had an old VW, It's kinda interesting unpicking previous bodgery .
I still don't think this is related to my cutting out issue though, the bodged connectors appear solid.

Some effort has gone into it as well, they've cut the connector, and looks like there's some support wire in that mess .Oldiebut goodie wrote: ↑14 Sep 2021, 16:57 Effing heck! What a lash up. I see things like that on heater looms and wonder what goes through peoples minds to get results as bad as that.
ALL power to the stereo gets cut when the ignition goes off as well, resetting it to demo mode and clearing all the radio stations, every time. Small issue, but infuriating. And Stereo wiring is so comically easy, how earth could they have got that wrong?!?!

Only bonus I can think of reference the stereo, is all be it a small amount of current being drawn when maintaining its memory it could affect an alarm system, and over time a possible drain on the battery when vehicle not in use.

Just wire the power for the stereo to the leisure battery.

If it affects both the battery live for the radio...
And the ignition live for the ignition system...
I have to wonder if it is something totally unrelated like a loose battery terminal, faulty ignition switch...
Or even dirty, loose or corroded earth crowns behind the dash.?
Time to go back to basics...

Re: 1990 - 2.1 DJ WBX - Cutting out, but infrequently
I think I might have confused things with the mention of stereo wiring! Its like that by design (they've wired it to a toggle switch to change from perm to switched ig). It's not an old stereo (has DAB), so It still seems an odd way of wiring it. If it was draining power i'd have expected it to cut power completely. Anyway...
Originally it was a kombi (254 chassis), converted by Devon (presumably early in life). Full width bed, badged as a weekender originally. No leisure battery but does have mains hook up.
Sounds like doing a full service, cleaning up earths etc and removing the interesting wiring tweaks might be a good start anyway

Earth strap in engine bay and one attached to gearbox must be in excellent order. And their mounting points too.
