Re: Differential knackered
Maybe nothing to do with your issue, but on a similar drive vehicle I had, the drive shaft when connected to the CV joint also had a circlip on the end of it to assist keeping it in place. Have you any pictures.

Re: Differential knackered
It is possible they have sheared off. This happened to me on a van I had some years backislandboy wrote:looking at cv joint, wheel end, I can see the cv bolts still in position even though drive shaft is floating free. Is there a likelihood that the cv bolts have sheared off from the rear wheel shaft ?

Re: Differential knackered
no pictures at the moment, I'll get the van jacked up tomorrow for a deeper investigation.
Not sure about circlip in place as it was the mechanic who re assembled the unit.

Re: Differential knackered
The boots may have stopped the bolts from coming out of the cv joint itself, do you know what manufacture of the cv joints are, there are some poor quality makes that wont last very long. The original make is top quality, i was making a tool from one last week and there looked like a date stamp on it, if it is, that means they had done about 170 thousands miles and they werent knocking !

Got cv joints from brickworks, genuine ones.

Re: Differential knackered
Yep. Rubber boots prevent loss of bolts. Sounds to me bolts have sheared off. Should be easy to see. Grab an allen or spline socket and dig out a bolt from the cv joint.

Re: Differential knackered
Managed to get to bolts out of cv joint, wheel side, looks like they haven't snapped off thankfully but can any suggest why the threads are worn in the way they are. The bolt on the left is one of the original ones.

Re: Differential knackered
Not sure. Perhaps the rotating effect at different angles of the cv? Either way, they dont look up to the job. Are the Brickwerks too?

Re: Differential knackered
Might have to back pedal here! Manual only mentions lock washers on gearbox side and not on wheel side.
Check if you have washers on gearbox side.

Re: Differential knackered
They came with the kit from Brickwerks. I've ordered a new set of bolts and Brickwerks have confirmed that these bolts are 10.9 grade hardness.

Re: Differential knackered
Cant ask for more than that.
Perhaps they were not tightened to torque spec. Seems suspect after just 100 miles though.

Re: Differential knackered
The serrated washer are fitted on all the bolts they are the important part of the installation of the drive shafts , then the correct torque must be applied, the bolts will come loose without the serrated washers even if the correct torque is applied.

Re: Differential knackered
Wear on bolts could possibly have been CV plate rubbing on threads before complete separation.
Check wheel side holes for wear on thread.

Are they Stainless steel? Also the heads look wrong, smaller diameter.
