Engine running hot - coolant pipe issue?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Engine running hot - coolant pipe issue?

Post by Slaydog »

This is probably a no brainier but do you think this kink in the coolant pipe running to the RHS of the engine could be the culprit for my engine running hot. Needle pushes up to 3/4 when in stationary traffic. (More than I’m comfortable with - usually doesn’t sit more than just over halfway)

Thanks

It certainly won't help.

Is that a normal fitment or something somebody has bridged as a temporary repair, either way needs sorting.

I’m not sure - been on since I’ve had the van (5 years) slowly discovering and sorting all the botches - been a fun journey (at times) and getting there. Just trying to identify the right section to buy. Think it might be this one:

There are two different pipes that can go there for early late and late late junctions. (Yes that sounds odd but it makes sense)

You might have an early late junction and a late late pipe fitted which is why you got the kink, as the late late junction moved that connector over about an inch.

Still follow?

Early pipe is shorter
Late pipe is longer

Thanks Stesaw - I follow. I actually think I have a late late junction as the connection is to the right of the diagrams I’ve seen so far.

I reckon it’s actually a makeshift pipe that’s too long after the previous owner got their early-late / late-lates in a muddle trying to get the right size.

According to manual, your temperature readings seem fine.

Thanks! That’s reassuring, I’ve ordered a new section of coolant pipe to address the kinks. It’s the fact that it’s running hotter than previously - I don’t want it to continue on that trend.

I'd do a complete coolant change while you're at it to give the system a clean out of all the old stuff. Unless you know its been done recently. Just make sure you aren't mixing coolant types.
