It's the control panel for an underfloor gas convector heater. Holes for thermostat and ignition button. Can't remember the name of the heater, even though I have one in Van Blanc. Mine needs a coat of Hammerite!
Many thanks everyone, especially Colinthefox! I think they didn’t bother with the heater in mine as there was a giant square hole where it should have been on the floor.
Cheers again

(Still learning the rest!)
It was for a Riviera Deluxe heater. We had a working one in a van we once owned, and it was great. Effective, efficient, almost silent, in some respects better than a Propex. Required no power, except electronic ignition button (which we converted to 9V battery), as there's no fan - it's purely convection. When not in use, it's covered by a metal plate and then a square of carpet, so it's virtually invisible, and takes up no interior space. I don't know why they weren't more popular. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album ... _id=343618
