Finally fitted isolation block kindly donated by Mocki...
Added a regulator and tested using method above. Ran at high speed with a 240v drill and alternator output topped 13.8 volts. That's good enough for a spare alty. So many thanks to all contributors. Still learning.
Who would have thought the isolator block plays such a minor/major part.

isolation of the positive from the negative is pretty damn crucial tho...
