Clunking - on big Exmoor hills

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Clunking - on big Exmoor hills

Post by adrianbutter »

I've been reading lots of posts on here about driveshafts - or more specifically the CV joints.  Does this sound like a CV issue?  I've been hearing the odd single clunk when starting to reverse, or 1st gear forward - especially alternating between the two.
Then in Exmoor on a 30% hill, when it got really steep, the same sound but much louder and continuous - clunk clunk clunk. Stopped when reducing throttle, but started again if I tried to go a little faster.
On lesser slopes, I can throttle happily in first and second without issues - it just starts when on a serious first gear only hill - especially on those steep uphill and tight hairpins.
Any advice?

(No issues otherwise - just did 200 miles home)

Ade,

First off, check your engine and gearbox mounts - they could be shot and flexing too much - hence the clunking when on inclines and on drive take-up.

CV joints tend to make a 'clucking' sound rather like an angry hen!

(Both examples above are from my own personal experience).

Hi, a thing you could also check is the lower alternator support flange, its a design weakness and can fracture and it can't be seen unless the alternator is removed!
