Rear Brakes Binding/Noisy. Scratching my Head!!!!

Post by totallyconfused »

Hi,

I have just replaced the rear wheel bearings on my van (T25, Aircooled, 1982, 1600 CT.).

Whist doing this I overhauled the brakes.

I renewed everything....Back Plate, Brake Cylnder, Shoes, Springs and Adjusters, and the Drums.

Looks lovely....like brand new.

However, having put the new drums on something is binding/rubbing. The drums are getting hot and making a noise, especially after braking.

I have fiddled about with the adjuster and whilst the wheels spin freely, no great resistance, it still sounds like something is rubbing.

Tomorrow will take the wheels off again and have another look.

Any suggestions where to start looking/ likely culprit?

Many Thanks.

Hi,

Will do, will take some pictures once I have got the wheels off etc.

I also replaced the rubber brake hoses as read they can get blocked up and break down over time. Changed all the brake fluid and flushed/bled the brake system. The brakes and hand brake both work....just something seems to be binding/rubbing.

Cheers.

Hi All,

Good News, Have found the problem.

Back Plate rubbing on the new brake drum. Should of noticed it when I put drum on....the price you pay for rushing.

in the pictures you can see where the drum had worn the paint off the new back plate.

For sake of completeness here is a link for a good article on doing your rear brakes....

https://www.vanagononline.com/articles/ ... ar-brakes/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(Vanagon is what they call T25 in states)

Has a great picture of the spring set up, and good advice on pitfalls when doing this.

Have tried to upload my photos, but they keep failing?!? Any reason why?

Sorry about that.

These are the images. First one is the great spring lay out one taken from the link to the Vanagon article.

Next one is one showing the paint rubbed off the backplate where the drum was rubbing.

Last one is shot with the drum on....because it looks pretty.

Hello, I was just reading your post on grinding rear drums, can you remember if this only happened during braking?

I have the same situation, new everything, including hub bearings, cv joints. But I get a strange grinding noise when applying the brakes and when applying the hand brake on the move.

There is evidence of the hubs grinding the backplates so I ground back the hubs but the noise persists.

It only happens whilst braking, not cornering or anything like that.

Thanks.

Fixed!

The backplates flex quite a lot and anything that rubs on them makes a horrible groaning noise.

In particular it was the pins that hold the shoes in place. I just pushed them from the front, compressing the spring, which gave enough room to lag them in copper grease from the rear of the back plate.

Been for a test drive and it’s silent. Apart from all the all things that make noise 😄

I don’t know if buying better backplates in the first place would have prevented this? Either way be sure to copper grease the retaining pins where they meet the backplate 👍
