I've just returned from a 1,500 mile trip to France. As my 1.9 diesel engine leaks a few drops of oil I checked the level before any long sections of driving. I did notice oil had been blown onto the back door of the van when doing motorway driving.
Anyhow to get to the point when i returned to Blighty and used my van, the oil light came on. I immediately parked up the van. I drained the remaining oil and found i had just under 2 litres plus what is left in the filter. I'm asuming the oil light should warn you before a critical level is reached. Is there likely to be any damge done to my engine?
thanks
Oil warning light came on ( any likely engine damage)

The oil warning light is NOT for oil level, that's the job of the driver with the aid of the dip stick. Oil warning light is for oil pressure.
It sounds like you were lucky this time. BUT the oil on tail gate sounds a bit ominous
