Engine starts then stops

Post by Tazerjo »

Hi
Hope someone can help or advise
We broke down 20mins into a 4.5 hr journey home from Cornwall. We have been recovered back to London but now have the joy of trying to work out what is wrong with the camper
She is a water cooled 1.9 petrol engine 89 plate
We have change fuel filter and fuel pump one of the recovery guys seems to think it could be fuel blockage but it look like fuel its getting to where it needs to be
She starts but after a while cuts out
Any advice on what to do or if anyone knows a mobile mechanic in south east London (Blackheath) area
We should be going away this Friday so in desperate need of help

Thanks
Jo
Omg.... We just got our first campervan. Yipeee

First suspect for me from your description is the TCI unit, that makes the spark, so basics first spark, fuel, air ; then start it up if it will and get it warm to fail point then recheck

Hi

This was replaced not that long ago. In the last year.
Will check wiring to it etc
Any other ideas if not that?

Thanks

maybe dodgy wiring to cut off solenoid if it starts and fails on fuel or could be wiring to hall sender if it fails on spark, ditto coil breakdown, or dizzy cap, HT lead, rotor arm etc..plenty of options if it's spark loss or maybe crap in the fuel, water in particular trapped in the bowl of the carb can become a glutinous emulsified liquid glue type gunk which blocks the jet, un-emulsifies when not agitated and separates then gets churned up when restarted and repeats
