Over my head too.
I always avoid the stuff. From when I have seen it I think it is hard / brittle so tapping with a mallet and twisting the pipe is what I would try

Maxstu, I know this probably a rubbish comment, have you emailed Holts? They create a version of the stuff and high chance it's their product on your exhaust?!

Hope you get on with Holts ok, generally these companies get back to you quick nowadays & have a support desk.
No luck on the van yet, the gaskets on the way once the garage has them I can talk to them timescales.
