My Honing tool arrived today so tomorrows job is to see if I can hone out the scratch on barrel 3.
E D I T- scratch that, thanks to 300CE's kind offer of a barrel I'll replace the scored one. :-)

Now be careful, you seem a bit keen on scratching things - don't go scratching your new barrel as well, you'll get a reputation

Still keeping up with your updates BBB, not much I can offer at this stage except for a bit of mild humour :) , delighted to see the support you're getting from other members :ok

Well... as I'm practically re-building the bus from scratch.....
Yes, I really appreciate the support and parts from members, hopefully I can help others on here too.
Thanks Paul. PM sent. :ok

My BW order arrived today so did the new studs and 10l of coolant, good to see the new bits starting to outweigh the old and knackered.
I'll re-post that image... No I won't, Tapatalk is playing silly buggers.
I went in to work this afternoon and cleaned the heads again and blew them through with an airline.
Then Belzona'd them, I'll let it cure for 24 hrs before sanding it back with 800 grit.
I know it's a bodge but short of filling the pits with weld and skimming the head in a milling machine, I think it's justified.
The milling head on the works lathe isn't fit for purpose, I could get them tigg welded at a pinch but wouldn't want to risk distorting the heads.

Are non stretch available from anywhere? or even stretch for that matter? searching the forum and further afield suggests I might have to get new con-rods. If that IS the case, do I also then need to ream the small end bushes?

What's the risk with re-using stretch bolts? will they over stretch and shear/snap?

E D I T- oh, hang on, is this the right bolt? https://www.vwheritage.com/113105425b-b ... c-vw-spare
And do I need new nuts? I asked the wife and she just sniggered. no help there.

Yep, I believe they are what you need. I had read about them somewhere and they were being described as "type 3" conrod bolts. Just checked with Etka and that's the right part number.

Interesting note from someone from an Aircooled background that the WBX went back a couple of generations in terms of the non stretch conrod bolts, but that the type 4 / T25 Aircooled engines do not appear to have a separate part number for the conrod bolts. Something I'll get back to no doubt. I think I have a crank and rods on a shelf somewhere.

Cheers yet again guys. :ok I appreciate you keeping me right.
As far as I can tell, WBX's came out of the factory with stretch bolts fitted (mine are certainly stretch) but the non stretch ones fit.
Some confusion reigns depending on who you listen to.

You're right, WBX did have stretch, but as Itchty said, they are no longer available so old tech rules :ok

I'd get some new nuts too, if only to keep the wife amused

early WBX had non stretch
late WBX had stretch (.becuase they were considered stronger for the 2.1s)
con rods same
both fit they are interchangeable

Stretch NLA and some consider them inferior

Good to see you making progress with this, cheering on from the sidelines but utterly unable to offer any help. Internal combustion engines are not something I’ve ever gotten into. No doubt I’ll have to learn more about my JX one day...

Thanks Roger. It's getting there and will be all the better for it once it's done.
Thanks Pual, Nice one.
I'm waiting on another BW order so the re-assembly is on hold and I'm just pottering about cleaning everything. :ok

I gave my new fridge/freezer a good test today, froze the crankshaft down to an indicated -15*C while heating the cam and dizzy drives in the oven.
Dunno about -15 but it was seriously cold and the drive cogs just dropped on perfectly. :D

I also found a handy mirror in the shed that was just the right width to take a shet of emery paper wrapped and taped round the edges.
Using 400/600/800/grit wet paper I sanded the belzona on my head seal surfaces back nice and flat. fingers crossed it'll seal well now.
Various othe cleaning jobs done too.
It's hard to get parafin round here, I guess no-one uses it any more. you used to get it from a pump at the garage but that was in the days when folk ran petrol/parafin tractors. am I getting old?
