Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
Offside rh rear corner. Looks like the old thing has had a small ding at some time, the fuel filler conduit has perforated quite badly (I have a better one on a panel cut) but... the new C post is in and I have sourced some CDL parts from Germany for the cab doors, to go with the loom I got last year.

Looking a lot better now. Some "hidden details" to discuss, then the rear wings can go on

In the meantime, a little light dash prep for the aux heater and aircon controls

Looking good Ian, some very nice tin bashing going on. Have you collected all the bits for the air con?
I was hoping for some pictures of a factory compressor?

Gary is doing some lovely work for me.Bigjcc55 wrote:Looking good Ian, some very nice tin bashing going on. Have you collected all the bits for the air con?

Both sliding doors have been repaired and rear wing fitting means its getting close now
Found most of the bits to upgrade the bus to CDL now which will be a nice upgrade, if expensive when I have to get 5x actuators...
Whats up with your aircon compressor? I have the choice of a Sanden replacement or an original one for either the 2.5 engine or the supercharged, I'll take some pics to compare.

Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
Thanks Ian, at the moment the compressor is fine I just wanted to see if the factory one had the same pipe fittings as mine,
It would look a lot nicer in my engine bay as the aftermarket sa bracket and compressor doesn't look very tidy.
It has come in very handy the past couple of weeks with this nice weather, I wouldn't want to be without it now.

Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
I think that there were early and late pipe/hose arrangements, big window vans may well be different again.
I have two alloy aftermarket engine compressor brackets, both different to the OEM one but the curved steel part that passes under the compressor is identical in all cases.
PS went back and looked at your build thread, the bracket on your engine is completely different!

What you need is something like this one that I don't need its die cast and may be an early version, not sure.

Its very similar to the (later?) VW part, but the one bit I dont have as a spare is adjusting trunnion and its long M8 bolt.

Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
Because this will be working vehicle, I have made up a slide-out arm to carry a vise.
It will draw out far enough for the rear jaw to clear the bumper (300mm), if it has to hold a long object vertically.
Mocking up to position the spare wheel retainer too, all working out nicely!
(PS It's a different van)

Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
I did occur to me that a German vise would be in keeping
But a Heuer is an expensive thing and I like Sheffield steel!

Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
Gathering up a few more bits: new fixed quarterlight rubbers (one appeared to have split at the bottom front corner and was letting the weather in) and some rather splendid "all in one" cab door looms for the T4 CDL actuators

Re: 1986 syncro Caravelle twin slider
"Big window" SA Microbus mudflap repair, 6 nuts undid no problem, one I had to cut off, one went *ping*
No option but to drill down the middle (using a tube nut screwed onto the stub as a guide) and tap the plate to take an M6 stud.
Its got three turns engaged and Loctite, so its as good as a nut & bolt.
All so I can get the brackets blasted and plated...
PS anyone got a surefire method for removing overspray spatter from polyurethane rubber?
