Cheers, that confirms my suspisions. a couple of the studs are stainless i think. not good.
Hope they come out ok.I feel a brickwerks order coming on.

yes, Would be good to know when the re-build was done and by whome.
bores look good, slight marking but no scores i can feel with a finger nail.
Pistons feel sloppy in the bores though, a few measurements to do there methinks.

One barrel on the other side is stuck in the head so I'll have a read of itchylinks before proceding further.

the problem is I think you will find that they have probably been inserted at the case so you have M10 in the case not M12 so standard studs won't fit

It'll be interesting to see what BBB has when he gets the bores off. I suspect that something like a Timesert has been inserted rather than filling and helicoil, so the original threads may still be intact

Yes you are supposed to be able to do that using stud extractors.

I have removed helicoils before but not a timesert, though I do have a spark plug repair in one of my other cars that has failed after a number of years due to it unscrewing with the plug.

Thanks for the warning. It does look like there are inserts in there.
I'll know better when I gingerly remove some studding.

P.s. Frome the ring marks on the bores it looks like 2 pistons might have nipped up.
On the plus side, I cant feel any movement in big or small ends.

Those marks on the bore don't look too bad, do you think they will come out with a little hone, assuming they are still in tolerance ?

Do you think you have found anything yet that would explain the knocking, I suspect you are going to have to split the cases. Endfloat OK ?

Piston skirts show no wear at all but some ring gap, bore etc measurments will tell the story.
I reckon a quick hone would clear the ring marks no problem.
Gudgeon pins came out no problem, one is a tad tight.
I'm generally pretty pleased with what I'm finding in here ( apart from the studding) but havn't found the cause of the original low oil pressure that it's had for a while.
I think you're right, I'll need to split the cases and look at (measure) the big ends.
Yes, it has some appreciable end float. and needs shaft seals..... it needs all seals. hahaha.
