Kind of you to say although there are those that are click-happy when it comes to dealing with problems. My 'custom' exhaust in the WIKI was the result of not rushing to buy and chewing the problem over for a day or two. Now there seem to be loads around with bike cans at the back so the idea obviously caught on, as did rollering, not just here but Italy, Norway etc etc.
Jerome K Jerome who wrote Three Men in a Boat (funniest book I've ever read) said that there were two types of cyclist - those that ride them and those that enjoy tinkering with them. My 'tinkering' was the result of a young marriage and being skint all the time. Before I knew it I had Beetles turning up for servicing and two years later it became a job. That was 30 years ago and I do other things now. Some owners had money, some didn't but you find ways to get the same results regardless of the budget. Some things just aren't worth their price tag and the skill is in recognising that. So chuffed you got it sorted and didn't give up.

Just thought I'd bump this thread up and say thanks in a double whammy, original circa 1980 starter fixed with a cleanup, new brushes + solenoid. Not too difficult a job, I found getting the Bendix all correct and lined up was the hardest part.
Interestingly, I bought a new one from europarts just incase it was terminal, and the main body of the new one was only about 2/3 size of the original starter, and when connected up in exactly the same way, spun quite a lot slower too. Happy days, and thanks to the previous posts all
Thanks for bumping the post, I'm having very similar issues and also keen to try and learn to repair an old starter. Lots of info here so plan on doing the tests/checks buy I'm also going to try and order some replacement bushes just to practice.
The starter is a Bosch 1005822385, I had the same thing as the original poster in struggles to locate parts. Should I be searching for just a section of the above part numbers? I read that the 100 is just a standard number and the 5822 is the model number?
This is for the 400 not the 402 ending starter so that you can see the type of part nos. that you need to look for on yours. I haven't got an ID for the petrol motor starters.
Ok, so each part will have a separate number stamped somewhere? I've not taken it apart yet so hopefully will see the info as I strip off the solenoid etc. There was nothing else on the outside but it's also really pitted on the main body so no chance of seeing anything there.
I've had a quick brush off and I really can't see any sign of numbers so I think they've gone. Is it crucial to have that number or is it possible that the local Bosch agent will be able to ID it?
