squeaky under braking
hoped not to be back here so soon - buggrit!
ok the problem is rear nearside rear.
When braking both in gear and out of gear there is a clunking sound from the wheel.
When I slow down more this sounds louder but is clearly a squeak rather than the clunk/knock.
With head out of window it is clearly a rhythmic squeak but inside it sounds more like a knock.
I have removed the drum and can see nothing loose/warn or mouselike.
The bus does make a bit of a groan when rocked from side to side but not the same sound
Any bright/reasonable/dim ideas?

Me too!
Hi Old One, thanks for the response.
Have herd that bushes get squeaky if they are old. The van is 20 yrs old but only done 33K miles, has been stood for about 7 years.
The noise has only started recently though.
Am perparing to strip the wheel/hub etc down this weekend unless anyone has any ideas.
Cheers, Paul.

From the way you tell it . I don't think its hub related. I could be wrong. Sounds to me something like a mounting, as you say you get groan when rocking the van. Very hard to give an opinion if you cant hear the knocks and groans your self. The two sounds may have nothing to do with each other..Hope you get sorted

CV Joint
Hi Ben,
well that sounds painful. I happen to have a new one in my garage - very weird coincidence (was in the back of my old bay which went years ago but I kept it just in case)
Is this a garage job or DIY - mechanically I am far better than water & lekky stuff so would be prepared to do this myself?
Cheers, Paul.
Like the look of the shiny new red bus - bit more tasteful than the beetle yellow. Got any more pics?

Paul,
It may be if you van has been stood that the joint has just dried up and needs re-packing with grease. If you've got the tools its straight forward.
When the joints are dry the bearings rattle around and clunk like mad. Try wiggling the drive shaft on that side - moving it in and out, see if that temporarily stops clunking - in which case it's more than likely the CV joint.
More pics of the van here http://194.242.159.246/brickyard/forum/ ... =8608&PN=1 It doesn't look as bright red as this really - much darker - not really captured on these pics

Thanks to all for help/ideas
Cheers all those who offered assistance.
Stripped offending wheel. Cleaned and lubed everything. Put it all back. Tightened all the bolts and presto - no squeak.
Strong suspicion this is the handywork of the knuckle dragger that overhauled the bus a couple of months ago.
Now on "silent running" so off on a long trip at the weekend.
Thanks again.
