I'd leave well alone unless you're an auto electrician.
If you are an Auto electrician go ahead and upgrade to a late model fusebox but you're opening a huge can of worms.
Worth removing all fuses and cleaning the fuseholder contacts with a fibreglass brush. disconnect the battery negative first to be on the safe side.

Ok I'll heid that advice thanks as I'm not a auto electrician. I do have a concern that the wire that goes to the fan gets a bit warm when on full and was blowing the fuse. That's the two on the right of the fuse box on their own.
I am just concerned that I need to find a live wire at some point to add things and I don't know where to take it from as incontinence want to over load the wire.

I'd deal with that first then. Possible cause is your heater motor is likely on it's way out and putting strain on the system (switch and wires).
First off - there are far more knowledgable people on here regarding al things wiring.
There is loads of info on here and a whole section on electrics on wiki. Well worth a read. If you are looking to add electrical systems read up on upgrading your main live from the battery as a starting point

Fuses on 1983-85 boxes like mine are different.
Most of the fuses in these boxes are 8amp (white). The remaining fuses 7, 9 and 10 are 16amp (red). Earlier boxes like yours may be wired differently, but a 5amp (yellow) fuse at position 8 doesn't look right. Somebody on here may be able to confirm what ratings should apply in your earlier van.
I got some paperwork with what I can only presume is a list of the new wiring for the fuse box. once I get home I will have a look and post up what I have.

I would invest in time and tools. And lots of A4 paper! Start tracing the wires, map them and then systematically start using some proper vw spec terminals. Get rid of all the naff connectors, get everything fused and that should reduce the fire risk.
