In the meantime are there any checks I can do before forking out for a new alternator? As a start it's only pulling 12.3v with the engine running

Contrary to what I thought it looks like it's the alternator that's playing up not the starter motor. Gone and ordered a new starter now but might as well for it and keep the old one as a spare.
