Eberspacher D2 woes

Eberspacher D2 woes
I'm putting this out there so I can have a think over the next few days.
Eber has been working fine, then stopped working, thought that this was due to low voltage, checked the batteries and all showing + 12.8v. (twin leisure)
Checked the fuse from the leisure battery (main feed for eber) all good.
Checked the eber fuse and the 25amp has blown
Tried another fuse, but just as it made contact, sparks were seen at the fuse and the fuse was proper hot and light smoke trails came out of the main air inlet.
Clearly a short, I haven't looked at anything externally but the trails of smoke from inside, lends me to think it's internal.
I have the posh eber controller and it doesn't give any fault codes.
Your ideas and assistance are greatly appreciated.

Very few people have D2 heaters, they mostly have the old D2L ones. ( I presume that you mean that you have an Airtronic which is the D2)
Removal and strip down to find the cause would be the first step. Remote diagnosis will be difficult without knowing exactly which area the smoke came from.
+ "posh controller" doesn't help working out which controller you have.

Yes it's the airtronic and the controller is the 701
A job for later in the week, but I'll whip it out and start looking. As always not in a convenient place to access but it has to be done.

You have fault indication on a 701 - press and hold the heat button until the display shows "dAtA" - it is in the manual for it.

No faults displayed. I tried that when it failed
Shan't be till the weekend now, till I can get in and have a look at the wiring etc but what a pain in the whatsits.... Never mind another learning curve

It appears that it is a dead short on the Eber side, after reviewing the diagram and installation, it will be a struggle for me to isolate (safely) the diesel inlet feed [because I don't where it is tapped into the system] , therefore will render me vehicle less, until the eber is sorted out internally. It won't be until the end of the month now until I can get another vehicle on the road.
Mr Oldiebut goodie, please bare with me, Pete installed it and apart from the external wiring this is another one of those learning curves that I'm going to have to go through to identify the problem.

You can remove the diesel feed from the heater side of the fuel pump - fuel won't leak out as it works as a shut off valve when not operating.

Only been a little while... but time to get sorted
Appears there was a short in the wiring, sorted now though, which was the original problem (I think).
Now, will not start at all. Voltage checked, all good. Connected red and yellow wired on heater's harness and get 12v on the control branch.
After doing a bit of research it looks like the ECU is locked out? Or something is not quite right. The control panel is not showing any fault codes at all, either.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated, although I'm not sure how much of the repair I will be able to undertake myself, but willing to give it a go

I would expect there to be at least one fault showing.
What wire was the short on? Might get an idea as to what has happened.
Does your 701 controller have a white logo on it or is it blue? You can only get fault codes with ones that have the blue logo on. You may have to find a dealer with EDITH software for diagnosis and clearing of a possible lockout.
You can see why I don't like Eberspächers and don't deal with them!

Hi
701 controller with the blue logo, the original short fault was on the main 12v feed to the eber (shorting on the body ).
Bugger, EDITH software hunt now ... Anyone close to Northants (week day home) or County Durham (weekend home)?

If it was shorted to the body of the heater there is a good chance that the ecu has been fried.
As you aren't getting any fault codes with that controller there is every chance that diagnosis with the software will be impossible also as it may not be able to communicate with the ecu either.

Typical... Anyhow, swapped out controller for the older mini controller just to check, so expect it is an ecu out job.
Not to worry, van is going to be prettified in the next week, so it won't need the eber to work will in the paint oven
I will get the thing working, might take another 2 years though

Yep, ecu fried. It is having a rebuilt Hella then all should be good.
