The coolant leak doesn't sound bad to me, its not pouring out, just a steady dribble which gets evaporated and leaves crystals on the engine around the leak area.

As you said you don't do many miles a year so maybe spend your time and money on the other jobs first.

Meanwhile, you could maybe get someone knowledgeable to have a look at the leak and work out the options and cost.

Another thing you could try is cleaning the area, trimming off any dirko that oozed out last time ( silicone doesn't stick will to silicone) then apply a fresh bead of Dirko S on the outside, won't last forever but will buy you time.

If the seal will peel off easily on the lip side the clean under and squirt sealant under.

Changed the Coil and it might be my imagination but its seems smoother and more responsive. Got it hot enough to get the fan on and it seems OK so far. Guess I will only really tell on that front once its 25 degrees again on the M25 :-(

Still losing water hand over fist though

I took the advice on here and went campershack.

I'm glad I did too, van is not not leaking and running better than it ever has since I bought it! Seals replaced, timing set up properly and all over a sudden hills offer me no challenge any more ;-)

Thanks for the advice all and thanks to Andrew at campershack too!

A Happy ending!
Can I ask - did the engine heads come off easily - did the long studs come out - does the engine need to come out etc?
I have a leak, and my worry is the studs will snap and then the job is a whole lot bigger...

Thanks,
Adrian

The problem is you'll not know until you try to remove them. I had a leak for over 3 years, didn't mend itself but it never got worse either.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?
