Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

Cheap oil coolers?

Post by ash1293 »

With the van away I've too much time on my hands and the mind wanders.

Ebay is awash with cheap oil coolers such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-10AN-For-C ... Sw7EJZiXvD

Has anyone used one of these kits or is this one of those items where you do really get what you pay for? The idea would be to locate the cooler at the side of the engine bay to benefit from the left side air intake.

Crickey, you weren't joking when you said cheep. I paid an arm and a leg for mine. Fitted it right up front of the rad. I'd be interested to know if the branding was worth the extra money.. That said, it's been on a good few trouble free years.

Don't llaugh
But when I got my WBX over ten years ago I found it the oil light occasionally flickered when really hot and the tick over faltered. The engine was clearly on the looses side. I really needed to use the van while I refurbished the interior. So not being aware of the this forum at the time and being unaware of the existing integral oil cooling system WBX oil cooler, I fitted an aftermarket Kenflow cooler using a an oil filter adapter. The Kenlow cooler being fitted into the rear panel of the engine compartment and controlled by a thermostat in the oil feed controlling a pair of PC fans. Incidentally Kenlow are now wholesale sales only to the motor industry.
I then got several years use out of the van before the oil light raised it's ugly head again and the engine noisily expired. I retained the aftermarket oil cooler to this day on the basis - Let sleeping dogs lay.
Over my many years of both two and four wheel ownership I have always successfully rebuilt my engines but for the first time (in circa 50 years) I farmed the WBX out and sure enough it went bang fortunately under warranty when the gear came off the camshaft.
I do wish that WBX parts were more readily available as next time I need to do it myself.
