1.7 Diesel Exhaust

Post by The Hairy Camper »

My (1984) 1.7 diesel exhaust down pipe is goosed. I've had a look online and all i can find 1.6 and 1.6TD replacements.

Anyone know where i can find a decent one?

This one looks like it's the wrong year:

I am confused now then.

My van has the 1.7D stamp on the side of the engine (i've got a picture but i don't know how to upload), but i just got under the van and i'm sure it has the 1.6 exhaust on it??

It looks exactly like this one (which i just noticed says 1600-1700 in the web url thing, but not the description):
http://www.justkampers.com/vw-t25-parts ... -1987.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is my Van a KY?? Or was there another version then??

Cheers.

What's your location? I have a used 1.6 silencer and maybe downpipe going spare if you have the 1.6 system. Maybe someone has used a 1.6 manifold ( if that is possible - I know that the 1.7 head is slightly different).
Use http://www.techpowerup.org to upload the pic.

Cheers oldie. I'm based in the north west. Silencer is in good condition apparently?

Where it connects to the engine:
Image
Comes down and bends round (unlike 1986 1.7 exhaust??.) Ignore metal clamps, this was some recent welding/bodging to stop it falling apart for the moment.
Image
Joins silencer.

1.7 Stamp.

That certainly looks like a 1.6 system to me! And a 1.7 block! Can't remember what the 1.6 exhaust manifold looked like now and can't check as someone had it.

Well i'm glad i used my eyes before i ordered anything online!

So i guess the question is if early (pre 1986) 1.7 diesel engines came with the 1.6 exhaust system? A phone call to just kampers tomorrow may solve this!

I sincerely hope my van has not been tinkered with by a "Dr Frankenstein"!

So i rang just kampers this morning and they basically said the same as you oldie. That the 1.7 didn't come out until 86. They do think i have the 1.6 exhaust though (down pipe and silencer).

I guess it is possible that the engine could have been swopped to a 1.7 at some point? Would the CS/1.6 exhaust still fit properly that way?

The van is registered as a 1.7, but i suppose this could have been done after a swop.

This is what is sitting in my shed:

Image

The silencer is 24" long, I expect it to be the same as you have on there, ( excluding stub) tailpipe is welded to it, hardly any use at all.
For checking Hermes prices ( 8kg the lot) - pm me your postcode. You can have the lot for the cost of the postage if you want it. ( should be in the region of £6 -£10)

I thought that the 1.7 pipework was slightly bigger than the 1.6 but am not sure. Outside diameter of this is 40mm for the downpipe and 44/45mm for the tailpipe. Manifold end - stud spacing, holes are 50mm apart.

Any help?

That looks like the one! I just measured the silencer and it's the same length! Happy to try it out for the price of postage Oldie :D Cheers for being a top bloke.

Do you reckon my van started life as a 1.6 then??

Will PM you now.

I have recently used http://www.vw-mplate.com/mcode.php to decifer the M -Codes that appear on your vehicle tag/vin code label. I found my little white sticker on the cross-member under the steering wheel.

It listed all the options that were included when the van was manufactured including the engine, trim spec even the exact date of manufacture and the port in the Uk that it came in at.

I do not know legitimate they are but the data they provided me matches other searches online that I have done in the past, especially the Brickwerks Vin number decoder. The website has been registered since 2009 and is very slick.
