Valve timing

Post by pierce »

I have finally got my replacement JX in and running, it sounds lovely compared with the old engine and is smoke free, but the valve timing sounds like it needs sorting.

I was hoping to either find someone nearby to me (Widnes, NW) to do it for me, but ringing around its either too old or for those that would touch it, they are booked up for weeks.

Next plan was to buy a the vw valve tool - VAG 2078 or HAZET 2574-1 so I can remove the shims without taking off the cam, but it seems like there are none available anywhere in europe, and usa takes too long to ship.

I am off on my hols in a couple of weeks so could do with this sorted.

Is there anyone local to me that may be suitably equipped to do the job (shims etc)
or
Does anyone know of an alternative tool to the Hazet 2574-1 that is readily stocked.

Thanks in advance :ok

What makes you think the valve timing is out?

Its running well apart from when accelerating it makes a noise a bit like a kid doing a helicopter noise.

Cam and pump timing are spot on as they have been adjusted.

Looking at that tool I wonder if you are meaning tappet clearances?

It's quite common for the clearance between the cam and the valve to change particularly on the exhaust side.

You can depress the shim bucket with careful use of a large flat bladed screw driver.

That noise is not the blow off valve is it?
Important to make sure the valve clearances are correct though.

Thanks both, I will check the clearances tonight and give the large screwdriver method a try. I have already spent more time trying to find the correct tool online than it would have taken me to just remove the cam :D

I didn't even concider the blow off valves, you could be right as the noise is when I accelerate. My last engine was so much noisier that I wouldn't have heard the blow off, it's the first time I have heard the indicator click since buying the van :D
