Suspension Knocking

Post by DoubleOSeven »

Put some new springs in but now got knocking from the front at all speeds even very slow. Can you tell any issues that are obvious from these pictures?ImageImageImageImage

the top ball joint in the first picture looks like it's leaked lube and would knock if worn, have to take the weight off to pry and observe for play usually and check the upper wishbone bushes for play too

after changing all my ARB bushes and drop links I found my upper ball joint was the cause of my knocking

ImageImageImageThe lower arm sleeve were the problem. Knocking stopped when I took the anti roll bar off though. Every cloud and all that?!

I'll do the upper ball joint too though, as you've both suggested.

Few more questions ...ImageHow on earth do you get these in here?? I did get the 21mm ones, for those eagle eyes out there. '84 wbx Image

...and finally how do you squeeze the lower rubber doughnut mounts enough to get the nut on?

Just a thought, check these:

Image

(picture: Van-again - Mr Wilford)

They're in the middle of the chassis, level with the wheels. If either has play in it, you'll get constant clonking. I know cos I've got to do mine tomorrow

Droplinks on yours at least look secure, even if they might be old.

Can't remember how I did mine so I must have just been lucky and got enough thread showing. You could pull it together with a ratchet strap or twisting a rope, or connect one side without the upper bush, then put the other together and put a jack under to compress it? Then return and do the same to the original side?

Shouldn't be a prob once vehicle is off jack/stand to get nut started.

If it's the drop link bushes, I had to ratchet strap the bar down onto the lower wishbone to show a thread so I could start the nut on... Pretty tight too
