Tiny Oil leak

Hi all,

I seem to have slight oil leak. See picture.

Level is fine, and it never leaves a drop on the road, not that Ive noticed.

Will it be ok to put some Wynns Engine Stop Leak in to see if it stops it?? or will this make it worse

Wouldn't even think about putting that stuff in my engine. Find out where it's leaking from first & see if you can fix it. In any case, if it's just a tiny leak you're in good company. Can't be many T3's around that don't drop a little oil now & then.

Cool, wont order then.

Apparently coming from a seal from box to engine.

I know most of these bad boys leak at some orifice, so its good to know Im in good company

Is there a bolt or a stud missing there? Looks like something missing from that hole :roll:

Its for an exhaust bracket for a standard mild steel pipe, looks like you have got a fancy stainless. Not a difficult job to change the oil seal, its quite a common issue I have done mine, just make sure its engine oil and not gear oil though, you do not want to start loosing any of that.

Few questions asuming it engine oil (how do i check?) Is it easy to change the seal?? How in gods name can I do this?? Could I do it?? etc etc

Ooohhh another person from South Wales :ok

Before doing anything drastic, have you tried to clean off all of the oil contamination, to work out the exact point of the leak, and see how much is coming out?

gear oil has a distinctive smell, have a sniff of both engine oil and gear oil and see which one it smells like. Dont be sniffing any other stuff though :rofl

Another South Wales V Dubber over hear as well (sunny Port Talbot :-)

What garages do you guys use locally for your T25 ? (got a 2.1 petrol / was 1.9 petrol)

Dropped oil in ours for years (drove the Mrs to distraction - likes a nice clean driveway) - changed oil filler pipe (helped), - then it dropped a con rod :-(

Trying to decide:
Get a VW Engine Company turnkey rebuild (with new engine case) - preferred option (but need a garage to take engine out / put back in).
Get local (ish) - West Wales rebuilder to do similar (with a garage to take engine out / put back in).
Use a VW company local (ish) in Pontardawe to do similar (to a & b), but they put engine out / in.
Get a second hand engine (have the option on 2 x s/h 1.9 petrol) (& still need someone to take out / put in).

Trying to find a garage round here is a bit difficult.

In the past 4 years I have used VolksEngineering in Cardiff ( Chris is a nice guy, though busy, and they did fix my skylight once by sealing it shut). Havent used him for a while.
Freds Garage in Llanelli (though a bit far for me) Lee knows his T25's and did a good job at repairing the top hat on a trailing Arm. Again busy little place, but he is good. Though this time they damaged my skylight with a low roof. Did get it fixed, but had to pay labour which I wasnt too happy about, and they replaced the d bushes when I had a week ago replaced them with the expensive poly ones. They only put a new set of cheap ones in.
CP Motors, just up the road from me, I did take it there to get the water pump repaired. Expensive though £200.

There are a few places around but I am still looking for someone who I feel comfortable to take the van to local.

Whenever I go up North I try to coincide with a visit to Gasure. Steve put a second hand engine in it for me last year.

At the mo, any smallish jobs,I have a go myself, armed with the haynes and tips and advice here, (replacing leaky radiator, rear shocks, but anything major ie engine out where specialist tools are needed I would have to look for somewhere a) I trust, and b) dont feel like Im putting them out). Touch wood the van is going well at the mo.

It all depends on your budget, if the vans a keeper, I would go with number 1. I thought the turnkey service included them doing everything for you.

Also find out how much it would cost to take the engine out. If its reasonable I would get them to do it, then pallet the engine off somewhere.

How confident would you be taking the engine out?? If I had to I reckon I would give it a go. If you ever need a hand let me know, though I would be more of a hindrance more than anything. I could read out haynes manual for you

I'm more of a hindrance than a help as well - I can bodge anything I put my hand to (unintentionally - it just happens !), so I leave it to the professionals these days, and no longer have a garage to tinker in anyway, or access to proper tools etc (will do the basics, but that's it) - & the Mrs will kill me if I get more oil spots on the drive.

I know how things work (in principal), but my muscles & body are simply not up to the job any more (late 40's).
I'l read up on anything (brickwerks & this site is always good), and make sure I get all the parts for garages I get to do work for me (& see every repair as an improvement).
Me & the Mrs have done the inside of the van pretty much ourselves, & I did help with the bodywork rub down when we resprayed her at VEE DUB when they were trading in Bridgend (I can take things apart brilliantly !)

Garages I use are:
Harwoods Garage, Port Talbot - old skool mechanics (who still drive classics)
Maynards Garage, Pontyclun (for our Mazda MX5) - Ken is also an old skool guy (& fussy with how things are done).
Ken Britton (Auto electrician) Port Talbot - good as gold

Probably looking at using SBVW in Pontardawe (Swansea) as they seem to have a good name on facebook (& VW specialists).
