REMINDER TO CHECK FUEL PIPES

Hi Guys
I replaced my petrol tank including all pipes and seals only 2 years ago.

Take a close look at the breather hoses. These are not immersed in petrol but are shot.

Replace yours sooner rather than when it's too late. Brickwerks sell ethanol pipe in all sizes needed.

Noticed a few cracks on the fuel hose in the boat the other day - diesel and it has been on less than a year, so you petrol users aren't the only ones. It was good quality hose at that.

I did all mine about 10 months ago with the good quality R9 tubing & proper clips etc from the local factors and I've noticed very small cracks in the outside of joins already.
Is this the shelf life of this tubing? It's got "suitable for diesel & unleaded" stamped on it, so surely it should be more durable than a year?

One end of the breather pipe on mine is borked, so I currently don't fill the tank to full (until I can get time to rip the whole lot out and replace. Until then, I check the whole lot weekly to ensure no other erosion or leakage elsewhere).

It begs the question; as it would seem that even high quality pipework can corrode and crack quite rapidly, is there anything that we could coat the tubes in (particularly around exits/entries) that would reduce the corrosion over time? I'm assuming it's not the fuel (if you use the right pipe!) that causes them to crack, but the environmental effects on the stressed area (e.g. any part that has been cut and is an entry/exit)??.

Any suggestions?

TBH I'm expecting the brickwerks pipe to be indestructible. At over £10 per metre for 5.5mm id it'd better be.

The hose needs to be ethanol proof, R9 isnt.

4.5 Fuel Injection Hose Medium-Pressure Coupled and Uncoupled Synthetic Rubber Tube and Cover (SAE 30R9)
Hose primarily intended to meet the demands of fuel injection systems. These would include, for example, electronic fuel
metering (EFM), electronic fuel injection (EFI), throttle body injection (TBI), and the like. Other areas of utility are those
applications requiring fuel permeation resistance exceeding 30R8 and ones which require fuel resistance greater than
that obtainable with 30R6, 7, and 8. Exposure of this hose to gasoline or diesel fuel that contains high levels, greater than
5% by volume, of oxygenates, i.e., ethanol, methanol, or MTBE may result in significantly higher permeation rates than
realized with ASTM Fuel C. This hose may be supplied in either a coupled or uncoupled form, and is useful in the
transportation of gasoline, ethanol extended gasoline, diesel fuel, lubrication oil, or the vapor present in either the fuel
system or the crankcase of internal combustion engines in mobile, stationary, and marine applications. This hose has a
maximum working pressure of 0.69 MPa (100 psi) up to and including 12.70 mm (1/2 in) ID. This hose may be furnished
in long lengths, specific cut lengths, or as a part preformed to a specific configuration. This hose is suitable for use in
normal operating temperatures of 34 to 135 °C (29 to 275 °F) and intermittent use at 150°C (302 °F).
The construction of this hose typically consists of a smooth bore tube or laminated tube(s) of a synthetic rubber
compound(s) resistant to chemical attack, swelling, and permeation by gasoline, oxidized ("sour") gasoline, ethanol
extended gasoline, diesel fuel, and oil or lubricants. It shall be suitably reinforced with a textile fiber, yarn, cord, or fabric,
and a cover of a suitable oil-, ozone-, and heat-resistant elastomer.

The piece to note though is the last sentence - the outer isn't 5% ethanol resistant. ( Other than the hose is ethanol permeability resistant - not proof.)

R12 appears to be the standard to look for with alcohol, ethanol and methanol extended fuels catered for.
