Rear Air Vents Vanagon 1990
NOTE - Sorry the pics are not correct orientation - should be rotated! Hope that makes sense!
Hi All,
whilst trying to locate a leak in the rear cab we removed the rear side airvent to reveal a 'funnel' - see photos.
The 'funnel' on the right hand side is loose and not properly connected.
The 'funnel' on the left hand side is missing all together! We noticed very loud tip tap of rain inside the left hand side vent during a downpour - enough to keep us awake all night!
Any advice on the purpose of these inner 'funnels' (we are guessing they send air to the engine? or takeaway any water ingress?)

Yes air intake for cool air to engine. Right hand side for petrol, left hand side for diesel vans.

As above, the funnel is the top section of the engine air intake. It's on the right side in your van because you have a petrol engine, it would be on the left side if you had a diesel engine. The vents encourage air flow through the engine bay when driving - although there's some dispute on here as to whether they draw air in or vent air out when the van is moving.
In terms of your raindrop problem various people have done things like adding cable ties to the vents or magnetic strips on the bodywork to encourage the water to run off in another direction. See for example this thread:

We don't have a problem with any dripping noise in ours as we sleep with our feet towards the door.

I uses magnetic plastic strips on my old van which worked well

Yep me too, remove in winter.
can drip into either vent depending upon angle you park, I try to park with thhe rear higher than front and you don't get the drips

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the advice - we are going to try the mag strip first. Reassuring to know this is a common problem to do with angle of rain/design of gutter and vent and nothing more major!
Will post results once we have given it a go. Looking forward to a good nights sleep even in this awful weather!!!

They're fibreglass and are pretty solid - they've not discoloured or anything like that. They were about £40 when I bought them beginning of last year, so have gone up quite a bit since then though. Not sure of any UK firms making them.
