full beam on light bulb MOT fail

Post by martymart »

Cant believe it I've failed the mot because the full beam on light in the dash has blown. It's a a small filament bulb with two 12mm tails of wire that locate it in the holder / mount. None of the local shops can help I cant find one on flea bay or at just Kampers either.

Any ideas where I can get one?

Cheers Ralf I've had a look at that and I'm not sure it's the same. Mine is clear and the diffuser on mine is set in the dash also the image on brickwerks looks to show different wire "tails " to mine

I had the same issue. Bought the bulb from Brickwerks. After a brief panic attack as it didn't fit, I gently pulled the blue diffuser off, and it suddenly fit.

The old bulb wasn't actually blown, I think it was a case of a bad earth, as a bit of contact spray and wiggling made it come on as intended.

I would recommend checking whether you have power at the socket first. But the bulb fits without the blue diffuser. I replaced it anyway since the instrument panel was off.

And my van passed the re-MOT today, so now it's just a matter of paying the Danish taxes before it's road legal

Cheers,
Lars

To get it through MOT you only need something that indicates lights are on full, VW used a filament bulb because blue LEDs didn't exist then. You can fit a low power blue LED of same proprtions as other LEDs in dash but you need to attach a resistor to it.

Just swapped this blue one myself. I got the right brickworks one cause I was sick of faffing with the cluster by that point, bit yes there's no reason why not to put an led in with the right mod (though space in between the bulb and it's holder is very limited ?)

I 'peeled' the blue sheath off the bulb with some small pliers and did the straight swap.

Well got the brickwork bulb today excellent service by the way from them but it still doesn't work I've swapped bulbs around to check it works in the indicator holder so I know the bulb is OK
I'm stumped again!
Looks like its the auto electricians for me tomorrow
He also failed the windscreen washers for not delivering enough fluid but they work fine and spray the screen a treat so ill be challenging that one

The bulb is fed by the Blue/White wire to the dash. Ground is right next to it. It's fairly easy to test whether you have power at the connector, that may tell you whether it's the flexi print.

You can also test whether you have power at the bulb socket, maybe use a different ground.

Have you tried wiggling all the ground wires a bit?
