1.6td won't start after cam belt change
Hi All
Having a mare with my 1.6td. Did a cam belt change. Went through the timing several times and i am as confident as I can be that all is correct. Tdc on flywheel, cam locking tool fitting correct and injector pin in place. Checked timing on pump and came out at .9mm. Had to remove top two injector pipes to fit pump timing dial. Put it all back. Cracked the 4 pipes at the injectors and turned the engine over to try get rid of any air in system. All had diesel appear.
Was an easy starter. Now won't start at all. Not even a pop.
As I have so often read here, I am not a previous diesel owner and so am stuck at what to do next.
I keep thinking it must be the timing and so have gone through it several times but it appears correct.
Help!

Did you use the correct timing mark on the clutch cover? The v-notch not one of the lugs.

Yep. Noted the raised bits either side.

Cam belt tight on the pump side before tensioning?

Re: 1.6td won't start after cam belt change
Yep.
Have turned it over quite a few times now and gone back and checked the timing and all seems good. The only thing I query regarding timing is the pump pin. This fits through the sprocket and into the hole behind, but it is at a very slight angle. It does fit with no effort though. I can't imagine the belt is a tooth out but maybe that is a possibility?

Re: 1.6td won't start after cam belt change
I find that the tight side has to be very tight before tensioning, so tight that it is difficult to get the tooth latched rather than the belt slipping into place easily, so you may well have it one tooth out if it wasn't like that.

Are you sure you didn't disturb the wire to the pump solenoid? Just a thought...

Re: 1.6td won't start after cam belt change
Hi All.
Thanks all for your help, but still no fire.
So I've checked the marks I made on the old belt with the marks on the pulleys and number of teeth and all match up. So am as confident as I can be that all is correct there.
When I put the new belt on it started and ran but smoked a lot which it hadn't before. Old belt was loose and tracking was off. I then went through the proper timing procedure. The cam was very slightly off and so I adjusted this. Corrected the tracking and pulled the solenoid wire off so I could turn it over and check tracking. All OK. Put wire back. I then did pump timing by removing top two injector pipes. Put those all back and bled pipes at injector end. I have gone through whole timing procedure 3 or 4 times now so pretty sure it is correct.
The solenoid wire is definitely on but how can I check it is getting power to it?

Re: 1.6td won't start after cam belt change
Just put a meter on it, there should be 12v there. If you don't have a meter use a bulb, put the solenoid wire on the bulb contact and touch the body of the bulb to the engine.

Ignition on, touch the wire on and off the solenoid and you should be able to feel and/or hear the solenoid click.

Try cycling the glow plugs a few times and then try to start it ( with the cold start lever pulled out )
Check that you've voltage at the glow plugs.

I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Hi dave
When you say cycling do you mean waiting for the indicator lamp to go out , don't attempt to start, then turn off ignition and turn the key till lamps come on and then repeat?
I'll do the volt check on the glow plugs.

yes,my daughter does this [cycles the glow plugs] and it works! The injector pump on her car has a leaky seal!

Re: 1.6td won't start after cam belt change
Thanks for all you help but still no go.
Towed it to bump start it but hardly a pop.
I am wondering if it is an air lock? Have cracked the nuts on the injectors and got diesel coming through but no pressure as such just a dribble. Is there any specific way of bleeding the pump?
