New deep vibration and rumble at speed/4th gear

Post by Middle29 »

Morning all - Just yesterday my van started making a deep vibrating noise in 4th on the motorway. Feels like it's just at certain revs but pretty constant in 4th maybe 5th too Felt like it would go away momentarily if I bounced a bit on the motorway over a bump.
Front bearing has slight play according to MOT but this doesn't sound like bearing noise I've experienced with cars, was more a deep rumble.

I'm due to drive a few hundred miles next weekend so bit concerned- any ideas on how to narrow down what it could be?

I could feel it vibrating through to my feet. Various suspension bushes were changed recently so know I need to get wheels aligned but I've driven it a fair bit without any problems. Is the alignment something somewhere like ATS could do successfully?

Thanks in advance...

if you drop the clutch when in the noisy gear does the noise go away ? if so then it's the input side of the gearbox, anything from the spigot bearing, the clutch to the front support mainshaft bearing but probably the big mainshaft bearing, displaced and worn

Ok taken it for a drive and noise is coming in 5th gear but I think it's related to speed not gearing. Still there with the clutch down and definitely increases and eases in intensity as the van bounces over bumps.

I've recently had all front suspension bushes done. Wishbone bushes were done and left loose which failed MOT!!
It's got AT tyres on but these have been fine. And as mentioned wheel bearing had play in it front right.

I'm assuming the bearing wasn't replaced/tightened at MOT so i'd be looking at that as a first off, if it decreases over bumps then possible the 'stress/load' is being taken off it momentarily making noise go away. Alignment/tracking possibly being out won't help the bearings with the wheels wanting to pull in wrong direction and also if wishbone bushes were replaced was the camber re-set?
