How do I get the air out of my engine?

Had the water pump off yesterday and lost loads of coolant.

I've filled the expansion tank and overflow tank but the water level is going down very slowly and the temp sensor is bouncing off the end of the guage one minute and then cold the next. I thought it was an electrical fault at first but don't think it can be, that would be too weird! Ha ha

Anyhow while the engine was running I popped the bolt out of the rad at the front, no air in there and then opene the plastic (what I believe to be) bleed plug in the engine bay but nothing but water came out of that too.

So how do I get the air out and water in? I can't check the Haynes cos I think the garage that caused the fault has nabbed it! :(

you will have to do a complete bleed, there is no other way, look here.....

Bleed water system

I hate to disagree with more experienced T25ers but I have always filled the cooling system of the trundletruck by pointing it downhill! (rear higher than the front)!

Mine is a 1.9DG engine with the old water system. (Thermostat on the rear of the engine.)

Open the radiator bolt. Undo the bleed valve on the top pipe of the engine. Fill up with water etc. squeeze the top pipes a bit to get as much air out as possible. Close radiator bolt, start engine and rev up, top up as the air bubbles come out. Put on the header tank cap, fill the overflow tank and put on its cap. Then take the van for a run until warmed up and whilst still hot undo the bolt on the radiator and use the built up pressure to blow out any remaining air at the top of the radiator. At some time close the bleed screw which on my van does not come out or leak water either screwed in or out. I believe it allows the air from the top of the engine to bleed into the main water pipe.

Top up the overfow tank if it needs it and particularly after its cooled off.
You will need to bleed the radiator again a bit later just in case all the air did not come out the first time.

Never had any problems doing it this way in the last 12 years.

Water flows downhill I seem to remember.

Worked for my 2.1 as well, but some of the folks on here will not agree and still insist nose up is the ONLY way to do it. I say do whatever works best for you and it was certainly quicker nose down, but then I do live near a really steep hill which made it easier.

very true water flows down hill...... and by the same degree air always goes tothe top, and to get the header tank higher than the rad bleed valve you need to raise the rear by 3ft, which you cant because the front bumper hits the ground first.......... apart from the fact the design of the water pipes means you need to raise the front to get ALL the air out......
but, each to their own.......i'll just shut up......
