vw t25 1.6 td power dropping out - turbo?

Post by toddylaguna »

Hi All,

I have just purchased a 1.6 TD Doka with only 62K (genuine) miles on the engine. Its had very little use the last few years - literally to and the MOT station. Anyway, have taken it out for a few runs and I think there is some sort of problem with the turbo. When I am chugging along in 3rd gear or above it seems that the turbo cuts, a plume of black smoke appears for 20 secs or so and then the turbo kicks in again. It looks to be running pretty clean and the turbo is giving decent acceleration otherwise. This happens repeatedly under heavy loading.

Any ideas what this could be?

thanks

Mike

Sounds like a restriction in the inlet somewhere.
How does the air filter look? Age?
Possibly the pipe into the air filter collapsing at high boost/load.

Welcome to the forum also!

Thanks for the welcome! Have consigned my type 2 to the lock up for now and am trying to sort out the t25 for the summer.

Ok, I have to admit I have no clue about diesels and have just read (Baxters?) guide to setting them. Can you recommend a manual so I can get my head around what I'm looking at? Haynes?

I know what the air filter looks like, at least I think I do, so will have a look at it in the morning.

thanks

M

Lots of good reading but nowt about turbo diesels, sadly. Members page, there is a link for the VW diesel trading manual, + the Russel manual, which is. I seem to remember what the JK td manual Is based on.

So, if you were a member..., you'ld also get some discounts at various useful places, and we are quite a nice and helpful bunch

Anyway, back to the problem in hand, as the manuals, while very useful, won't answer your question!

The air intake pathway starts in the left hand air vent. And that's where I realise that my knowledge is missing anything about dokas!! :rofl :run Sorry! I don't even know where your air vents are!

Someone else will be along...

Of course they will. You could hitch anywhere on n the 80s but we did occasionally spend a night in the rain under a motorway roundabout, with no mobile phones in those days.

Could be a sticking waste gate on the turbo, make sure it's free, also check all the pipe work is connected, its common for diesels that have been pottered about their whole lives to have turbo waste gate issues, sometimes the turbos seize up due to never being used, i would lube the waste gate free it up( if it's stuck) and give it a thrash about for an hour or 2, get the revs alternating up and down as much as you can, literally foot to the floor then off , lots of times

Hi David,

Not wanting to appear stupid, but where do I find this waste gate and how do I lube it! New to diesel and turbo ownership so a bit lost.

thanks Mike

If you look down between the air filter and the side of the engine bay you should see it, follow the tiny hose from the top of the fuel injection pump to it, looks like a half size bean tin, there's a lever mechanism that operates the waste gate on the turbo, lube it all up

Mike if your van has the original " jx " engine set up ( with a kkk14 turbo ) you won't be able to get at the wastegate actuator...
Have a look at the "bov "( blow off valve ) on the inlet manifold as this might be operating to early ( I've got a port wine cork in mine to stop it working!)
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

ETKA is the VW online parts "catalogue" where you can see how your van is put together.

And so forth...

Actually the Bentley manual isn't that bad, and has ordinary diesel stuff, but no turbo stuff. Good for mechanical.
