hi guys,

my van came without the carrier, ive got a spare so might as well fit one. picked up the round plate but no "tube" brackets, are they needed or can i just put bolts through the hinges?

When you say tube brackets do you mean the pair of straps ,they are there to hold the wheel in place as well as acting as hinge pins.

Yes you need them
as said they clamp the wheel,

not only would it be thumping your feet as you hit every pot hole but it would damage the radiator coolant pipes running over the top and perhaps the fan and wiring, brake pipes etc.

VW were not in the habit of adding things for the sake of it.

still available and at a good price, parts 251801913 and 251801914 from classic parts.

you could I suppose bolt your wheel to the carrier, a bit like wheels are bolted to the recess of a car, then you would not need them.

Thats expensive ! The new vw ones are less than £15 for the pair. note there are two types, one pair for standard carrier and another type for larger carrier ,numbers for those start with 255.
