I'm rebuilding a 2.1dj (my first rebuild) and have measured the crank shaft end float, with the flywheel on as the Haynes suggests. So I know what shims to buy.
However my rebuild engine came from a van with a manual gearbox, hence the flywheel, but it will replace the engine currently in my van and be mated to an auto gearbox.
Is the end float influenced by what you bolt onto the crank shaft? So do I need to strip out the current engine to get the torque converter drive plate off. And then measure end float with the driveplate on and not the flywheel?
Much appreciated, Mark

You need to measure with the same flywheel or auto drive plate that you will be fitting
every flywheel and auto driveplate has production tolerances that vary, this will affect end float.
Well done for doing it yourself, we love build threads , they encourage others to have a go, if you have any pics they are very much appriciated

Re: 2.1dj crankshaft end float advice please
Thanks for confirming, I'm following the Haynes but then I had a little think about what I was actually measuring. I'd hate to get this far and then make the crank too tight or too loose.
It's the availability of advice from people like yourself that makes it possible for people to have a go, so thanks again for that. I'd encourage others to have a go too, I work in an office for a healthcare company, this is my first t25 and my first engine rebuild. I used a small engineering company for crank and camshaft inspection and have spent a lot of my hard earned at Brickwerks. But I've assembled it all myself and so far it's like a huge mechano kit. I'll try and post a couple of pictures after I've sent this.
Cheers, Mark

You are very welcome, not so long ago I was in your shoes asking for help, It's always easy when you know how
If you want it ready to swap ask in wanted for an auto drive plate, you can then measure this, fit the right shims and then it's ready to swap.
They are silly money new but recently I could not give one away easily so they are not in demand, somebody will likely have one for not too much money.

Great idea, but I think I'll just take out the existing engine though, it will encourage me to get it done faster
I can't seem to add photos, might need to talk to admin.
I'm going to hold onto the flywheel for a little while incase I do go manual at any point. But if I do go crazy and start to have a clear out (or my wife makes me) I'll let you know.
Thanks again, Mark
