as for my carb set up (manifold pancake carb etc.) this looks to be DF? so in that respect im going to be following the same route as smiffo?

Not exactly because you have an early cooling system

on fb I was looking at the pic on the engine stand, it is late is that the engine?

Join the dots indeed.

Well, you need to think about the coolant flow through the pierburg carb.
Solex doesn't have it, so coolant pipes will be different.
I have late coolant system, so can't help much there.

I have a DG inlet manifold I can sell if you go that route.
You will definitely need a new throttle cable too.

Good luck. And take notes from Itchy ref the engine build too - he's done one or two or three :rofl

just seen the pics!

So can you tell thats a DG just from that pic of it on the stand?

And the engine in the video is a different engine, although in my van and thats the ancillaries i would have used on the rebuilt engine (although not now as they are DF)

i can either go DG Manifold carb etc or aftermarket twin carb/ linkage kit?? (something i was going to to in the future but preferably would have liked to set up my rebuilt engine up with standard carb first, but as i dont have them.............)

E D I T: FFS i just saw your arrows, so im guessing 1 is pointing to the larger inlets, what are the other 2 showing?

No I can tell it' a late case ( extra oil pressue switch and large bolt at the flywheel end of case) and because of the large inlet ports on heads it's DG or DJ or MV ( or even a few other codes) inside, they did make DF's with the late case but they would have small inlet ports. the 2.1's - DJ/MV should have an oil cooler this doesn't so it says DG.

No 100% guarantee that somebody didn't put the late DG/DJ/MV heads on a late DF case, if so the cam inside would be DF.

This is why you need the engine code from below the breather tower, one more possibility is the code has gone, VW recons removed the codes.
