Ooooerrrrr! There has been some hammering of loose metal there for some time by the look of it, surprised it didn't totally disintegrate.

Oooerrr indeed!

Been talking to forum member garyd who may be able to supply me with an alternator fairly cheap, but I've been looking at my alternator bracket today and think I might have a problem as the two holes are different sizes – the one furthest from the back of the vehicle (foreground in the photo below) is wider. There seems to be about a 1.5mm difference in diameter, enough that the bolt fits fairly well in the narrower one but flaps around a lot in the other. This does explain why the mounting bolt has tape on it I guess.

Could the hole have widened due to the alternator bouncing around? Or am I missing a bush of some kind? garyd's suggested this to be the case but I can't find any mention of a bush on the mounting bolt anywhere in manuals/online etc. Whether or not a bush was fitted it does seem like this would solve the problem, assuming I can get hold of one, otherwise I'm not sure I have many options beyond sourcing a new alternator bracket.

( I have seen some alternators that utilize a roll pin on the pivot that allows different sized bolt and bracket and tight fitment in the bracket)

Right, sorry!

So new bolt, swap the electrical tape for a roll pin (and the old alternator for a new) and all may be good.

Thanks.

There should be a bush in the larger hole which slides through and allows for the slight variations in alternator mountings.

Thanks bigherb.

Looking at a photo of that bushing, and the last photo I posted, I'm wondering if it's possible I already have that part in situ but that it's seized? If that's the case it's very very seized!

Had a look around and some vw models did use the roll pin version. Golf, Jetta, Passat,Polo,Scirocco.
