Well it carries current for sure but you can remove and even replace solenoid without spotting any poor connection inside starter body, thinking the problem is resolved when it isn't. You need to remove end cap to know for sure. In that respect its a completely different issue to a faulty solenoid, even if connected to it. The gearbox is bolted to the engine but each are regarded as different parts - in the real world.

Well, tried all three solenoid son the starter motor, all three work.
all down to dodgy connections I guess. You live and learn. I'll put the other two on eBay or in the for sale bit to recoup my losses.
