Underslung Eberspacher..
Hello,
Well, while the good weather is still with us, I have started my project.. underslung Eberspacher.
I have an Aircooled tin top van, and so storage space is limited..
To fit an Eberspacher requires a 'buddy seat' solution, plus the heater..
Just to make things that bit more difficult, the eber I have is a B1 diesel model, running on 24 volts..
Like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU73WQ0hIZk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So, as I shall be obliged to have a buddy box, then it will have to do several things..
Double as a captains chair.. ie a seat facing the rear..house the new leisure battery.. house the electronics, including future solar hook up..
store the diesel fuel inside the vehicle so that I can fill normally at the petrol station.. hold the fire extinguisher for ready access..
Have the fuel, battery and mains electricity shut offs to hand and so on..
and all this out of the scrap box and a squeaky tight budget...
So here is the first mock up..
and so , as it is December.. bad light.. but beautiful sunset stops play..
Ex HM forces will recognise my choice of tin box for the heater..
The original idea was to fit all the components in the box and graft the heater tube into the existing air heater hose, avoiding a hole in the floor,
but there is not the access.
So, having made my decision.. its out with the Monodex cutter and airsaw..
Whilst the Hammerite cures..
a little Landrover welding to pass the time..
Ho Hum.. another "pooh" sunset in Paradise..
As I'm not going to pass the heater into the existing system.. there will have to be modifications and..
A hole in the floor...
The moment of truth..
As the standard air hose is 60 mm ID, I have decided to use 80 mm pvc waste plumbing to carry the tube, fuel and electricity, to protect from wet and impact.
The jar lid is just the right size for the mock up..
and copies through to the underside..
Now I can start to plan where everything goes..
I want to be able to reach the switches from the driver’s seat, and control air to the front or rear..
That's it 'till after Xmas..
Have a good one......

Nice little project to keep you going
I've just fitted one under mine, bit easier job than yours as it was a replacement to an existing installation.
Disco looks like a nice little project to keep things interesting also

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
Hello,
and a Happy New Year to you all....
As the ski station is not yet open.. no snow.. I might still get this heater fitted for the end of January...
So..
Dressing up and band-boxing the Mk 2 battery box..
and deciding the fire extinguisher location..
Instead of using the Eberspacher mounting plate, I decided to use large air extraction screw clamps, as it allows me to align the
heater properly..
To help locate the locking plates, (cut down from 50 mm angle brackets), out come the Avdels..
To cut the hole in the floor for the passage of the PVC tube, I used a Bosch tool..
I used cutting oil for the metal part.. not even hot..
A polypropylene collar is glued and sealed in place with Sikaflex Marine mastic
Here is the table full of leisure electrics parts..
120 ah leisure battery, smart charger and relay, low voltage disconnect,12 to 24 volt 250 watt step up device, 220v mains trip,
4 way fuse box, solar controller , Control panel, 12 volt marine exterior sockets and plugs, batteries master switch, and so on..
all to go in the little box.....
Should be fun....

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
I would test that step up with the heater first - I tried that same one years ago and it failed to keep the current and voltage stable enough for heaters. It is still sitting in the workshop in the useless bits pile. (Model = JD1224)
What model are you fitting? You should be able to use the cheap 600w step up converter that I use on the 5Kw Webastos. They are around £14 from ebay.
E D I T: model in 1st post!
B1 = 500w start up current
Also - did they make a 24v B1, only mention is the D1.

Hello OBG,
This is what I am hoping to use..
Here is the popular auction site listing:
http://www.ebay.fr/itm/121108052169?_tr ... EBIDX%3AIT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You may recollect that I started with a 3 amp variable converter, which I abandoned..and am hoping that this will do..
Your advice is always appreciated..

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
That's exactly the same model that I tried - it may not be suitable. I may have just had a duff one but I found that the voltage dropped right down causing the heaters to shut down.Yours may well be fine but I would test it out first.
This is the listing for the 600w ones, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400565347344? ... EBIDX%3AIT, you will need a box for it also, this one takes it, 158 x 90 x 65mm, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301354048190? ... EBIDX%3AIT. The box is slightly too large but allows a bit more air around the converter. The converter runs cool after the first large current requirement for starting has passed. I haven't found that they need ventilation holes for air flow but some could be drilled. You will need a jumper for two pins on the board when stepping up from 12v - it will not work correctly if this isn't done ( a wire soldered across them will suffice if you don't have any jumpers to hand.)

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
Hello,
Knowing my luck....
Plus this is the replacement.. the only thing (so far) lost in the post..
Saved in my watch list...
Once I have got the electronic components in place,(I'll leave space for the box in case), I want to do a full test out of the vehicle, to see how well the leisure battery performs.
Do you have any recommendations for routing the stainless exhaust (25mm ish)..
I can weld bolts to secure the clips.....
On another post the 10 litre flat Eberspacher tank is under consideration..
This is what I shall be using, mounted vertically so that the filler spout is between the front passenger and the new folding seat...
.... above the petrol filler.
The tank comes with an un-vented filler cap, so I will be fitting a standpipe and air inlet valve.. and hopefully have no 'smell issues'
Little pause to chop onions..... wild boar cutlets, onions, and oven chips tonight..
Any way.. temperatures and snow permitting, I hope to get wiring this week end....
Maybe ski ing soon after....

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
There should be a tiny hole in the tank cap already, there has been on all the tanks that I have seen. 1mm hole is plenty big enough. The odour from this is nearly zilch - I use one as a petrol source in the workshop for testing the heaters, you have to have your nose right over it to smell anything. Admittedly it isn't being sloshed around like it will in a van.
It is easier to use the correct take off from the bottom - it goes into one of the flats that are on each bottom surface. Usually they come with the tank. A real pain to fit though from the inside as you have to go round the fixing points. I use one of those 4 clawed pickup tools to put them in. If you have a suitable tap lying around it is worth fitting one if you do go for the bottom fitting as you can then remove the tank at a later time for maintenance in the area.
I make stainless P-clips with a 2mm steel bracket for hanging the exhaust which needs to be held away from the body and underseal. (Old microwave ovens are a good source of thin stainless sheet).
As you are mounting in the buddy seat area you are a bit restricted as to exhaust routing, if you have an awning you really want to have it exiting on the other side so you will have to run to the rear and then run across the van to around the rear jacking point area - this keeps any fumes away from any fridge vents if fitted.

Hello,
Well, as OBG said..
this:
is not adequate....
So I'll have to order the 600 watt version..
Apart from that, on 2 batteries it runs a treat..
This will give an idea of the pipe run length under the vehicle:
The Webasto flexible inner tubing really holds the heat..
Ski ing next week end...
so the December project becomes.. Jan..then Feb....

Hello,
I'm about to order the step up unit... no orders before 05 02 2017.
Is there a type of jumper to order..
something like this..
and more stuff to know..
With my thumb like this
and utterly left handed.. it might be easier than soldering...
also as this was a work accident, they might not be best pleased if I passed it to our works electricial technician..

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
Just a standard jumper as used on old ata hard drives, dvd, computers etc. like this one. Annoying that they don't include one.
Couldn't see your jumpers at first - yes those are the little beggers. (Chinese new year stops everything for a week over there)

Hello,
With a few days of warmer and sunny weather....
I've made some progress..
The heater box is now installed, together with the 80 mm ducting carrying the hot air tube, power feed and fuel line.
The 80 mm ducting is PVC drainpipe, and fits into the grey collar you see in the floor, so the whole system comes
apart as 2 pieces..
A couple of views of the underside...
Here we are in the car park..
I might even get this finished before the end of the ski ing season...

Hello,
A bit of an update..
first some soldering..
The 12 volt exterior power points are fitted..
all the feeds to the heater are installed neatly, protected from the elements.
and here is the exhaust..
Now all this is lined up, I will be able to fit the battery box, seat and fuel tank..
I'm waiting for the electronic step up unit..
Maybe for the week end..

Re: Underslung Eberspacher..
Only 2 things - use rubber washers in addition to the penny washers for fitting the tank, there is quite a force on the 3 fixing points and metal to plastic hammering can crack the plastic there. And send the exhaust downwards at the extremity:
