Oil change. is 4.5 litres enough?

Hello all,

Carried out an oil change today and replaced the oil filter.
Everything went well except I'm buggered if I can see any accurate signs on the dipstick.
I definitely added 4.5 litres (as mentioned in wiki) in total, because I have measured 0.5 litres back into my 5 litre oil container.

Is it just a case of waiting for it to blacken up a little before measuring becomes a little clearer? I don't want to add any more for the sake of it but at the same time I don't want to drive around with it to low.

I guess its a Re-assurance sort of post.

Just keep adding a little bit and checking the dips tick after drying it off, you won't see clear oil so easily.

If I recall from my last oil change there's about 1 litre difference from the dipstick dry to oiled properly.

I put 4.5 litres in mine with a completely bone dry sump and a new filter after a new engine install.

Turned the dipstick and its three quarters full

Before you drain the gearbox oil first make sure that can undo and remove the filler cap.

Been out this morning and rubbed some plus gas around it.
Hopefully it will loosen it a little.

Good man. Find a length of hose pipe and a funnel and warm your oil (I stand the bottles in a bucket of hot water) before filling.
The hose pipe and funnel makes it a lot easier.

My funnel was the same diameter as the hose pipe so I cut a short length of 15mm copper pipe and used it to join the two.
Didn't bother warming my oil just takes a bit longer but it's a good idea.

Also make sure the drain and fill allen holes are cleaned of muck, not uncommon for them to be half full and then your bit is only half in, if it is tight you may damage the hex.

When refitting remember it's a taper thread it does not need to be wanged up tight.
