Has anyone ever encountered play in the steering column but not the rack ?

It's put on my advisory every year and I can't find what they mean.

I've also had this picked up on an MOT. Turned out to be the steering column support ring, that fits behind the bearings. Might also be worth checking the rubber couplings.

Surprised a loose column was only an advisory, also check your sheer bolts, if your dash has been out at some point then they may not have been tightened up enough

Thankfully all those parts are available now - they were not in the 1990s as I remember having to replace the bearing on a panel van with a phosphor bronze bush to get it though an MOT. I suppose at that time, failure in steering column components other than coupling (which you could get), were unheard of so VW didn't bother listing anything else.
