It is a very old cover and I've never removed it before, it looked more like scoring then impact which is a bit weird. Did them all 2 x 360 degree turns most of them pretty stiff but the first one turned much more easily than the others

I was going to leave it tomorrow but you tipped me over the edge. I'm pretty sure there's an improvement after driving it a while. Will give it a proper go tomorrow. The last time my van was making a noise like that was struggling up a hill in the Isle of Wight and it was terminal. I'm really hoping this time it's much more minor. Thanks once again for the help, there is no way I would have had a go without encouragement from here.

pat yourself hard on the back, even if it's no better you achieved a milestone in mechanics, you adjusted the hydraulic tappets and didn't *uck it up

I've got the usual "did I tighten everything up properly" worry in the back of my mind even though I know I did!
E D I T. did 20 miles today and engine sounds good. I did end up stuck for a few hours because I couldn't start but nothing to do with tappets!
