Ha! Length of scaffold tube cut down the side and opened up to clear the woodruff key for me.

You sir, are a genius. We have a section of scaffold pole kicking around at work. Good shout - I'll use that.

crankshaft in freezer overnight, heat gear and it should just pop on, you have to be quick though before it cools on contact, I've never had to brutalise one yet

My freezer isn't big enough with out removing the food
I put the gears in the oven and heated, and they just tap on, the brass dizzy gear may just fall on.

5 mins with heat gun on the gear and it should tap down easily with the driftotube and a knockometer. VW say 80° is hot enough. What's with all this getting it glowing business? I'd have thought if it's that tight/hot it could distort when fitted, as did my new "genuine" VWH gear.

Re: 2.1 WBX engine rebuild noob....
The comment on using a piece of scaffold tube got me rummaging around out the back at work.....we had a length of pole kicking around (it was thrown through our window many years ago - safe to say the area has improved a lot since).
Hacked a section off and gave it to my boss with some dimensions, who took it home and turned it into this last night.....

So.....80deg using the convection function on our microwave and I reckon I'm good to go. Certainly wont be glowing!

Yep - seen your rebuild thread and am now wondering whether I should be going for the sprung loaded tubes......just in case! Probably well worth the £60ish investment

if it's a keeper then worth it imo
if you have a noisy tappet it's almost impossible to hear which you just need to swap tgem one at a time
a couple of people have had problems with new tappets, are you using the old cam?

Yesterday's job. New followers, tubes and a speedshop exhaust. Sounds a lot nicer now!

I put a little smear of this on the followers before they go in. I reckon it should help break them in on the old but excellent camshaft.

NOS VW camshaft (+2 gearwheel so might be swapping the gear to the old one - depending on how the two gears mesh).
I have the original tappets too so I have the option of swapping out if need be.

looks Nice Andrew but shame about the rusty bits and oil leak, this is why it takes me so much longer to do jobs because I would have to treat rust and paint/ clean bits, I realise people put a van in to you for a job so you must just do that job.
