blanked!

Post by edoh »

evenin peeps -
another day - another (coolant) problem :)
as long as i've owned the van - it's had a blanked off pipe coming out the water pump -
see photo below - under the distributor -
Image
original owner had - devised a bolt and rubber tube and jubilee clip contraption - see below)
Image
this worked fine - until today! when clouds of steam indicated all not right from the engine bay. I had a look - and noticed the blanking pipe had gone! Completely Disappeared! A strange, dejected and nude looking pipe looked up at me! :)
Image
not sure what's happened -
or how serious or not this is -
have tried blanking it off again - not sure if this is a fix that will hold?
bolt + metal putty + jubilee clip round top of bolt n metal putty -
Image
has ticked over on drive ok - but havent risked a longer run yet -
any ideas on what might have caused this? And what a more permanent fix might be?
any ideas, thoughts, wild speculation - all welcome :D :ok

I prefer the previous bodge, but with better hose clips.

Permanent fix would be fitting the correct pump without the oil cooler spigot.

That's the dual purpose pump for models with or without oil cooler. Better repair than that thing that's there is to remove the spigot pipe and fit a blanking plug (aka bolt) with sealing washer. Lots of people on here will have kept the spare one from their new pump (eg if they have a 2.1).

There are pumps where you can't remove the spigot, I have a VW one like that, it's the aftermarket ones that have the two options.

It may also be corroded in place if it is removable.

just measured a spigot it's 10mm so new bit of pipe better clips and a sawn off 10mm bolt so you just have the smooth section, I can send you a suitable bolt if you want.

Good point. I'd assumed that it was aftermarket, don't know why. It is possible it's an original VW pump from a 2.1, re-purposed on a DG. Maybe just get a new pump without the spigot.

Personally I would not waste my money and time if the pump has not got excessive play just refit the bodge with better clips, after all there are plenty of other hoses with clips so it's not like they don't work.

Worth checking your cap quacks, a blocked cap will blow the weakest pipe off.

Not with just a screw driver and hose clips he won't...
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?
