Hello all, I've had a bit of gearbox trouble, but I've been lucky to find a gearbox from Northwest VW that was rebuilt by Aiden 3 and a half years ago, the box came with the full work report and new parts fitted. It's a good box.
However it had a petrol bell housing on it and my vans a diesel. I've took the bell housing off and over looked the fact that I'll need a gasket, I ordered stuff from Brickwerks last week and like I said overlooked the bell housing gasket.
I've bought a square sheet of paper from my local motor factors ready to make a new gasket and I'm wondering if it will need some kind of sealant on it when I go to install it?
The other alternative is using pro seal instant gasket which I've bought already instead of making a new paper gasket, is another one familiar with this product?
It needs to be done right as if it leaks when it's all back together it's gear box out again!
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: 1.6td Gearbox bell housing Paper gasket.
Last time I used a Renault sealant (got from a friend who works as a manager at a renault service/dealership) similar to pro seal. Worked great.

Cheers, I think it's the route I'll go down, my only concern would be the sealant not curing properly with the cold, what do you think?

you shouldn't need a sealant if the gasket is 0.2mm or thicker, hylomar blue is fine as a locator extra sealant if the case mating faces have tool marks or corrosion issues otherwise plain gasket, the dowels hold it in place whilst mating

Thanks Aiden much appreciated, just going of feel the gasket paper I bought it doesn't feel any thinner than the old existing gasket, if anything I'd say it's ever so slightly thicker, only a hair though. I'll check the mating surfaces for any blemishes, if there are none I'll go with the paper gasket.
If there are some slight blemishes would I use sealer on both sides of the gasket.
Cheers,
Rob.
