Which alternator?
Hi All
How do I tell which alternator I have on my van? Ropey bearings, and it'll either be a new alternator or maybe replace the bearings...
So how I know if it's 65A or 90A? Best place to look for part no?
Thanks in advance...

Re: Which alternator?
assuming it's origional Bosch, and assuming petrol and diesel look alike, the 65 and 90 look different 90A on the left

Re: Which alternator?
Thanks both for those quick replies, I'm hoping for a sticker but the difference in the end plates is a clear giveaway.

Re: Which alternator?
Gentlemen, you are both helpful, and have been for many years to many people.
I didn't find a sticker, but the backplate is clearly 65A. I didn't take the alternator off as slipping the belt off revealed that the bearing is spinning smoothly, a trace of lateral play but about 0.5 mm of fore-and-aft play, which is what I had first noticed on a cursory look-over. The water pump is also smooth, and no play.
So I shall resume my watchful waiting...

Re: Which alternator?
Why do you think you need a 90A?
unless you have fitted lots of extras a 65A will be fine.

Yes that desirable "upgrade" has always amused me.
45 amps is more than enough for these old ladies electricals.
