I honestly don't know what I'm talking about here but my vans loosing water even when its not being drove or ticking over, Its just been in for its MOT and I asked the garage to look for the leak, I got caught in traffic so I was late getting through and although the van was still on the lift, the lift was at ground level as it was almost closing time. The mechanic said there is a leak near the Thrmostat its where 3 bolts hold a cast alloy part together ( I'm assuming here to the engine) He's full of cold so doesn't plan opening today Saturday so it will be Monday at the soonest too take a look at it myself. I'm wondering if anyone can point me as to what the trouble might be and what parts will be needed to cure it? I know its a blind shot but after a problem free test pass knowing my luck its be one of the most expensive parts that will need replaced.
thanks in advance for any suggestions I will asap post a photo of the offender best I can say is the bloke said it'll be difficult to get the steel studs out of the cast alloy as one of the 3 studs is well corroded.

Re: 1.7 diesel engine water leak
The water pump is sealed to the engine with an o ring. Maybe that's leaking. Worst case scenario you'd need a new water pump, o rings, thermostat and thermostat cover. Another possibility is that the thermostat cover is leaking as it's also sealed with just an o ring.
That is, if a 1.7d is the same as a 1.6d

Just another thought.... your header tank cap might not be working properly so the coolant pressure in the system isn't regulated.

Re: 1.7 diesel engine water leak
Thanks very much Boatbuilder, I managed to call through to the garage to see the offending part 1st hand (although it was already off the engine ) it's situated below the Thermostat housing, it doesn't have 3 bolts fixing it to (again I assume here) the cylinder block. its a straight plastic with a rubber hose one end and an oval at the other end with two holes and a rubber O seal that fit to the engine I have seen photos of what looks like it on wiki page regarding water pump replacement the offending bit is still in situ if im looking at the right bit??
I will add the two photos I took as soon as I remember how to via Fotobucket?
Thanks again Eddie

Parts on its way finally have the part number is still listed on the Volkswagen system called into main dealers it's not listed on their computer but advised by salesman to try VW Heritage.
What helpful people the parts under a fiver the number on on it isn't listed but the salesman back tracked through their system until he found it what great people to deal with.

Re: 1.7 diesel engine water leak
I think they can be either black plastic or aluminium. My aluminium one was corroded badly so I replaced it with a plastic one. They're just sealed with an o ring so the corroded aluminium can mess up your chances of a watertight joint.
