Apologies if this is something that has been covered before but.....
VW Engineshop in Catford have quoted me £3700 to supply and fit a 2.2 big bore motor to replace my old `mileage unknown` 1.9 DG, and replace the injection system, supply and fit a new Pierburg. The price includes everything (except the gremlins they may uncover, coolant pipes etc) and is a `drive away` price.
Has anyone on this forum used these guys before?
Does this sound like a reasonable deal?
Will the difference be noticeable?
Should I do it????
Advice as always is most gratefully received.

Apologies, not clear on my post. I meant replace the injection system on the new motor with a carb set up.
Just find the 1.9 struggles a bit on the hills round here in North Devon and putting the feelers out for opinions on an upgrade so thanks for that!

Why would the new engine come with an injection system
normally you just buy an engine.
You can buy a recon 2.1 DJ (even with the surcharge because you don't have a DJ to exchange) much cheaper.
then sell your DG
The DJ is a common swap for a DG, the DJ runs fine on a pierburg.
you should already have a pierburg carb on your DG.

I don't think the extra 0.5mm in bore size would be noticeable over a 2.1 especially with only a pierburg on it. On top of this most 2.2 big bore kits have a lower compression ratio than the DJ 2.1 which will also loose you a bit of power, I suppose at least you could probably run on normal unleaded with the 2.2 whereas you really need superunleaded in a 2.1 DJ. I would go 2.1 DJ with surcharge and a gas conversion it would probably cost about the same!!! and half price fuel to boot.

Crumbs! It never occurred to me to use super unleaded fuel in my 2.1 DJ. Will the cheap stuff harm it? Am I supposed to? Will it go better?
I have a five speed box and have to do quite a lot anticipation and stacks of frantic stick stirring in hilly territory.
I don't think a five percent increase in power would help me much even if that would be achieved.

I use super unleaded when not on gas so that the timing can remain at 10-12 BTDC. On normal unleaded I have to retard to 6-8 BTDC otherwise when it gets hot working hard it Pings.

The anecdotal feedback I've heard on the 2.2 bigbore performance is disappointing. I agree that the compression ratio is too low to be an upgrade. Better off with a stock DJ.
Also I've had a couple in (TES built) that pressurised due to compression seal (fire ring) failure, which was probably down to the heads not being torqued down properly (well, they were very loose by the time they arrived with me, barely finger tight!)
The price quoted would be about right if you are getting a perfect late case, standard crank, and new almost everything else, properly built. Or put another way, for that spec (DJ) it's about what I'd be charging.
If it's reworked heads, knock off £4-500. Check what camshaft they're fitting. Check if/how they set oil pump cover clearance. Check they're new Conrods, or if not do they use new stretch bolts (or maybe non stretch)...Etc etc.
If you have a 1.9 injection it was probably a DH originally, and it's possibly had an engine swap sometime to a used DG. They are effectively the same engine. Personally I would keep (and fix) the injection, but if you want to go carb the OEM pierburg is still available from VW Classic, or there's now a cheaper copy from Brosal that would fit.
