Finally got the starter off, once Christmas and the usual shenanigans were out of the way. Curiously the lower arm of the clutch slave bracket was held to the gearbox with something with a round and featureless head, could not be undone. However managed to pry the bracket far enough to squeeze the starter out. Thanks all.
