Sleeve on fuel pipes? (and now fuel savers)
On a 2.1 injection there are plastic sleeves on the fuel pipes in the engine bay
I have never seen them on a 1.9 carb.
Anybody know the purpose?
I'd have thought they make it harder to inspect pipes.
If they are heat resistant then why does a 1.9 not need them?
thanks

Re: Sleeve on fuel pipes?
To prevent expansion under pressure (the pipes may get softened with engine heat)? Only thing that I can think of offhand. Do the injections run at higher psi after the pump compared to the carb models?

Re: Sleeve on fuel pipes?
Yes higher pressure I think but these sleeves are loose so not for expansion I'd think

Re: Sleeve on fuel pipes?
Only other possible reason then is preventing chafing by wires/pipes but they wouldn't stay in the required position being loose. Another VW mystery.

It could be to stop chaffing or possibly to help protect from touching anything hot but I would be more inclined to think that it is there because in the event of a pinhole developing in a hose, with a fuel pressure of over 3 bar you would end up with a very fine mist of fuel filling the engine bay, at least with the conduit over the hoses the fine mist would be contained.

this pic of a DJ engine bay shows a pipe unsleeved which implies pin hole spray is not the reason

Rob, you have a 2.1, do you have the sleeves or are they long gone?

Re: Sleeve on fuel pipes?
Heat sleeves I believe, had them on my 1.9 injection on the hoses across the top of the block. Not imperative but keep them on if you have them I'd guess. Can be a nightmare to thread the fuel hose through them when they're old and pinched though [DISAPPOINTED BUT RELIEVED FACE]
