Mains hook up and leisure battery,1984 westfalia
This might sound like a daft question to all you campers, when mains hook up is used does this also charge your leisure battery charged?

If yours has the BBB charger (Buzzing Black Box) under the left side of your R&Roll seat (sliding door side) then YES! both leisure and starter batteries receive charge when on mains hookup.
Easily checked by placing a voltmeter across the leisure battery (under the drivers seat) it should read 12.6 volts or there about's in good condition and with the mains turned off, immediately rising above 14 volts when the mains is turned on.

I've just plugged into the mains, should the black box you mentioned be making a buzzing noise? I can't hear one. Is this correct? As not clued up on electrics could you also tell me please where I could get a voltmeter from?

Yup..if you have the big black box charger under the seat, it should start charging both batteries (leisure and starter) as soon as mains is hooked up. Bare in mind the 'trip switches' next to the mains socket may need resetting.
If you leave the mains plugged in the box should start feeling warm after 15 minutes or so...and yes, if you listen carefully it does buzz quietly.
These big old chargers often blow the internal 'mini' glass fuse and are also known to blow the small overheat fuse. For service, you will need to remove the screws and get inside the charger (all power unplugged of course)
Hope this helps
